1) Lan to Lan (aka Site to Site)
With lan to lan VPN's, there is some device (router, firewall, concentrator) that terminates bot ends of the connection.
All traffic between sites is encrypted using IPsec protocol and integrates network features such as routing, quality of service, and multicast support
Each site has it's own internet connection which may not be from the same ISP or even the same type.
The routers at both ends do all the work. They do all the routing and encryption.
2) Remote access.
With Remote access, there is a piece of software installed on a PC/Laptop on one end and the other end would be terminated into a router, firewall or concentrator like Cisco VPN client, SSL VPN.
A simple method for VPN is PPTP. It is a software based VPN system that uses your existing Internet connection. By using your existing Internet connection, a secure "tunnel" is created between two points allowing a remote user to connect to a remote network.
